The Alamo

Sometimes we stop and realize that there is more to travelling than camping. Earlier this month, we trekked out to Bandera, Texas to visit family. It was a nice, stop and relax kind of trip, spending some long overdue time with parents.

We took a day trip to San Antonio. Had lunch along the Riverwalk.

And walked over to the Alamo.

It was much smaller than anticipated. I spent childhood vacations at Civil War sites along the east coast. Vast expanses of land encompassing long deadly battles. The Alamo sits in the middle of a bustling city. All the same, it is an extremely important part of American History.

The Alamo has a rich history. Battles here were later integral in the US requisitioning Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California. The Alamo changed shape and purpose throughout its existence.

From a religious sanctuary:

To a military compound:

I won't bore you with the history of the place or the battles. Most of us should have learned about the Alamo in school as children. If you have not, I highly recommend looking into it.

Come and Take It.
